Zodiac. LibraWhile I was studying Islamic Art and architecture at the American University in Cairo, I came across the different symbolism of the Zodiac that was depicted in manuscripts, etched on brass trays, bowls or enamelled on glass. The Vaso Vescovali made in Iran in the 12th century AD, caught my attention with its very cursive rendering of the Zodiac, and I decided to draw my own series. At the time I was experimenting with Calligraphy metal pens. I started on the series after looking at the exquisite drawings of the Safavid artist Riza Abbasi.
Later while I was working with Publi-Graphics Ad Agency in its Cairo branch, I suggested designing a newsletter for Hyatt hotel in Egypt. I finished the series which was also published a few years later as a calendar.
Elhamy is an Egyptian artist and teacher with 45 years of professional experience. He works in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, graphic and interior design, and wooden toys. He is the owner of Graffiti Artistoys, a graphic arts studio located in Maadi, Cairo, Egypt. He also owns a workshop for the production of educational toys and materials, and is co-owner of Box of Wonders (Sandouq el Agab), a shop selling folk-inspired wooden toys and automata in Fustat, Cairo. Elhamy recently moved to Los Angeles, California, to be near his children (and adorable grandchild) and looks forward to exploring new opportunities.
