Artist's Description

The Wheel MakerĀ
In spite of the traffic problems in the Egyptian capital, hand and animal- drawn carts are sometimes the only solution for the spontaneous planning of the old sections of the city,
and certainly the most economical. Shops for making and repairing these carts and their special sturdy wheels are located around the North gate of the old City built in 969 AD. Age-old methods of manufacturing are still employed by these craftsmen skilled in carpentry and metal smithing. Unlike other traditional crafts, this one is still alive and able to satisfy the demands for a mobile shop in the narrow streets of Cairo.
