Description
Folk tattooers in Egypt travel around the country from one religious festival to another plying their trade. Their repertory of designs includes Muslim and Christian folk iconography handed down from generation to generation. They are presented in paintings behind glass and displayed in hinged panels for easy transportation. The tattoos are applied to clients for therapeutic, religious and superstitious reasons. Now small crosses are tattoos on the wrist of many Copts. the body of these rich designs is not fully documented and researched. Fewer than 10 tattooers remain in Egypt today and perhaps in another generation many aspects of this traditional art will entirely disappear.
